Nancy Schafer graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Rochester and later received her PhD from the University of Michigan. Nancy has recently retired as a Professor of Justice from the University of Alaska, Anchorage. She is a former member of the Friends of the Library and is excited to be participating with the Friends of the Library Board.

Shannon Jones

Shannon Jones has lived in Alaska for many years. She has a BA in Speech and Education from the California State University at Long Beach, and an ME in Educational Administration from UAA. Shannon is a retired Anchorage School District elementary principal, an active volunteer for the library and the Anchorage Opera. She is currently the President of Navy League and Vice President of Zonta. Shannon has a life-long love of reading and feels strongly that the library system is vital to our community.

Carol Sturgulewski

A lifelong Alaskan, Carol has lived in nine communities throughout the state. She has worked as a writer and editor for Alaskan newspapers and magazines for the past 25 years. She is the co-author of two books and is currently working on her own humor book about raising families in the Last Frontier.

Carol received a BA in journalism from the University of Oregon. She is the past president of the Alaska Press Club and past president of the Alaska Center for the Book. She is currently a member of the Anchorage Cultural Council, Alaska Press Women, Alaska Center for the Book, and a committee member for November’s Alaska Native/American Indian
Heritage Month observance. She is the co-author of two books and is currently working on a third.

Kathy Kiddell

Kathy graduated from Northern Illinois University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Library Science and Social Studies. After moving to Alaska in 1972, she was hired by the Anchorage School District to be the school librarian at Turnagain Elementary. In 1981 she graduated from the University of Alaska-Anchorage with a Masters in Elementary Education followed by a certificate in Administration. She retired from the Anchorage School District in 1998. Then in January of 2000, she was rehired by the District to work as the Library Liaison for the library program. That position continued until last June.

She has been an advocate for libraries for a long time starting prior to 1981 when she served as the first president of the Alaska Association of School Librarians. She has maintained her membership in ALA, AASL, AKLA, AKLA-A and AKASL.

In addition to working for the Anchorage School District, Kathy has been a member of Delta Kappa Gamma since 1977. She has been an active member at both the chapter and state level currently serving as the State Treasurer. She is also a member of Central Alaska Retired Teachers Association currently serving as secretary.
